Set up built-in AI and semantic search

For the person who set up Stuga.

For the person who set up Stuga. These are optional and set up separately. You need access to Settings → This node and an API key (a service’s access code), or a running Ollama with suitable AI already downloaded. Ollama runs AI on a computer you own.

Documents, comments and search by words work without this setup. An outside AI tool, such as Claude Desktop, brings its own AI.

  1. Open Settings → This node → AI providers.
  2. Under Built-in AI, choose Set up.
  3. Choose a Service and enter its API key. For Ollama, choose Ollama (local); it needs no key.
  4. Choose a Model, the AI you want the service to use. If the service lists none, enter its name.
  5. Choose Connect.

Built-in AI turns on for people across your workspaces. Access to documents still depends on sharing. Document-text and database edits wait for review by default; an item’s owner or someone with the workspace’s Owner or Admin role can let AI edits apply directly.

  1. In Settings → This node → AI providers, under Semantic search, choose Set up.
  2. Choose a Service. Enter its API key if needed; the first built-in AI service’s key carries over when it matches.
  3. Choose a Model that meets the requirement shown below it.
  4. Choose Connect.

Stuga prepares documents for search in the background. Documents hidden from search are left out. Search by meaning becomes available as documents are prepared.

Open Edit, then choose Test. Answered means the test worked; otherwise the page tells you what failed. The switch beside each feature turns it off while keeping its settings. Remove forgets the service.

Changing the AI used for semantic search asks you to confirm with Save and re-index. Search matches words until that finishes.

Reranking is optional: it puts the most relevant passages first for Ask and AI tools. Without it, built-in AI does that when enabled.

The selected services receive the text they work on. Hosted semantic search receives the text of every document not hidden from search, plus search queries. For these built-in features, when all AI services used run on Stuga’s computer, the text stays there.

If Ollama can’t be reached, check that it is running and that Ollama address is correct. Docker on Linux needs extra setup; see AI troubleshooting.
